Black and white is hands down my favorite color combination to wear together. Snejana looks lovely here from the Gareth Pugh SS 2009 show in this beautiful Elizabeth I meets the Mod Squad outfit that perfectly embodies the postmodern idea of pastiche. Pugh's outfits were all black in the back and all white in the front, which symbolized for him an idea of emerging into light and optimism, from a place of darkness.
I love smart fashion with a concept, but what was even more arresting to me was the realization - in Pugh's show - that fashion can be cerebral while still being, at the very same time, incredibly physical. While Pugh's models were styled in clothes that evoked an image of a woman warrior (Queen Elizabeth herself often dressed in knight's armor), at the same time his garments respected the physicality of a woman's body. The models wore sky high heels and figure flattering leggings. More than any of his other recent collections, this collection might even be called sexy! Wow - what a first for Gareth Pugh. Bravo.
